Master director Zhang Yimou returns to the martial arts genre. Famous for his use of vibrant colour, in Shadow he takes inspiration from the tradition of Chinese ink-wash painting, masterfully creating a canvas of inky blacks and slate greys, punctuated with bursts of colour predominantly from the faces of the actors and the vibrant, red blood of the defeated.
